At 5 months of age degenerating neural cells were detected in the oriens layer and the polymorphic layer in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, in the cerebral cortex, and in the stria terminalis and neurofilament-positive inclusions were detected. Ubiquitin-immunoreactive lesions were just detectable above background at 2 months of age and then increased with age (measured at 3, 5 and 12 months).
