Center for Dynamic Imaging of Nervous System Function (CHOP/Penn)

The Center for Dynamic Imaging of Nervous System Function was founded in 2003 with funds from NINDS to CHOP and supports from CHOP and U Penn Department of Neuroscience and Department of Neurology. The Center has been catalyzing new studies and augmenting existing studies in the qualifying NINDS-funded laboratories. The resultant synergistic interactions between faculty members will continue to revolutionize our ability to study basic function of nervous system function and enhance understanding of these functions in human health and diseases.





  • Ultima Multi Photon Microscope (CHOP/Penn) ( Microscope )

    A multi-photon, or two-photon, microscope uses instrumentation similar to that of a laser scanning confocal microscope: A laser source for sample excitation, a scanhead with galvanometer controlled mirrors (or acousto-optic deflectors) to scan the excitation beam, and photomultiplier tubes to detect fluorescent signals. However, the confocal image differs in that optical sectioning is obtained using excitation in multi-photon microscopy whereas in confocal microscopy it is achieved using the emission pinhole.
    The Prairie Technologies Ultima multiphoton microscope is similar in many respects to other available systems, but differs in that it contains two independent pathways of excitation, one for multiphoton imaging and the other for multiphoton uncaging. Because this system is additionally integrated with electrophysiology a diversity of applications are possible with our systems. For example, the fully configured system is able to perform 4-D imaging, to integrate imaging with photolysis, and to integrate 4-D imaging with photolysis and electrophysiology.

  • Metamorph ( Software )

    "MetaMorph Software provides all the tools needed to perform meaningful analysis of acquired images. Common tools for thresholding, filtering, and feature extraction are included as one would expect. However, MetaMorph Software provides other more sophisticated tools such as the integrated morphometry analysis (IMA) module. IMA allows objects to be measured and separated into user-definable classes, based on any combination of measured morphometric parameters, such as shape, size, or optical density. A point-and-click interface, linking images and spreadsheet results, makes it easy to choose representative objects for classification and measurement.

    MetaMorph Software also offers many user-friendly application modules for biology-specific analysis such as cell signaling, cell counting, and protein expression. Each application module features a dedicated dialog box with intuitive setting selections, improved segmentation through adaptation to local content, as well as both field and cell-by-cell data logging. After analysis is complete, users can interactively view tabular and image results side by side for their cellular imaging application."

  • Volocity ( Software )

    Volocity is a sophisiticated software for visualization, deconvolution, and quantitative analysis of 3- and 4-dimensional image data.
